Spirit of St Louis took command in the stretch and drew off to earn the victory in the Listed Danger’s Hour Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday, 20 April.
A five-year-old gelded son of Medaglia d’Oro, Spirit of St Louis picked up right where he left off in 2023 – with a Stakes win. The Danger’s Hour win was the third straight Stakes victory for talented New York-bred, and his first in open Stakes company. The win improved his overall record to six wins and two placings in eight career starts.
Settled in mid-pack through the early stages of the race, Spirit of St Louis was roused into action on the far turn, then rocketed past longtime leader Heaven Street (by Hard Spun) to take the lead with a furlong left. At that point, the race was all but over, as Spirit of St Louis drew off to win by one-and-three-quarter lengths.
Bred in New York by Chester and Mary R. Broman, Spirit of St Louis is out of the Graded Stakes-winning mare, Khancord Kid (Lemon Drop Kid), and is a full brother to millionaire Bar of Gold, winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Bar of Gold has become a Stakes producer herself, as she is the dam of Graded Stakes winner and multiple Stakes-placed Coinage (G3 With Anticipation Stakes).
In addition to Spirit of St Louis, Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of Nash, recent winner of the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Medaglia d’Oro is also represented by Delahaye, winner of the Listed Tom Benson Memorial Stakes and Kallos, winner of the G2 Rubiton Stakes in Australia.
Medaglia d’Oro is standing the 2024 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $75,000, stands and nurses.
