Shifty shakes loose early to win the Catch a Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine

Two-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly breaks her maiden and becomes a Stakes winner in just her second start

It may have been just her second career start, but Shifty was nothing but professional as she shook loose from her rivals a few strides out of the gate and led the rest of the way to easily win the $150,000 Catch a Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine on Friday, 23 August.

Shifty, a two-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, had debuted at Woodbine on July 4, running an even fifth in a field of seven going six furlongs over the E.P. Taylor turf course.

A field of 11 juvenile fillies went to the post in the Catch a Glimpse, with Shifty overlooked in the six-and-a-half furlong turf contest. Favoritism fell on one of her Mark Casse-trained stablemates, Bullet, who was undefeated in two previous starts (both Stakes victories).

However, after emerging from a mad scramble for the early lead, Shifty was never threatened enroute to posting a three-and-a-quarter length victory over a turf course listed as good.

Ready for Candy rallied for second money with Shotgun Wedding taking third.

Shifty was bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms and was purchased by D.J. Stable for $350,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling sale. She is out of the winning mare, Elusive Luci (Elusive Quality), and is a half-sister to Big Runnuer, winner of the G2 Eddie D. Stakes. Elusive Luci herself is a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes winner, Stormy Lucy (G1 Matriarch, G2 Santa Ana S., G3 Santa Barbara).

In addition to Shifty, Medaglia d’Oro is also the represented by 2024 Stakes winners Delahaye (G3 Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes), multiple Stakes winner, Spirit of St Louis, Nash (Hot Spring Stakes), Our Pretty Woman, Loved and Kallos, winner of the G2 Rubiton Stakes in Australia.
