Lady Edith surged past rival New Boss in the shadow of the wire to take the $100,000 Mamzelle Stakes by a neck at Churchill Downs May 8.
Both fillies completed an exacta for their sire, Street Boss, with Navratilova’s (Medaglia d’Oro) third-place finish completing a Darley-sired sweep of the top three placings.
At the start it was the Midshipman filly Wink that broke the sharpest and went straight to the lead. She was pressured early by both Amanzi Yimpilo and New Boss, as Lady Edith was content to race at the rear of the field. With a furlong left to run New Boss surged to the front, but Lady Edith, who was under a full head of steam, was able to slice her way through traffic and just get up at the wire for the victory.
Lady Edith was bred in Kentucky by her owners, J. David Richardson and Sandra New. She is out of the mare Lady Grantham, a Stakes-winning daughter of Yankee Gentleman.
One the west coast, perhaps we are seeing what's in store for future Street Boss stars as his sons Street Art and Bochombo completed another exacta in maiden special company at Santa Anita. Bred by Steve Wilson in Kentucky, Street Art scored impressively in his debut winning by four lengths.
Lady Edith is the seventh Stakes winner of the year for her sire, Street Boss. In addition to Lady Edith, Street Boss is the sire of Australian Stakes winners Anamoe (G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes), Arcaded (G2 Blue Diamond Fillies Prevue, etc.) and Street Life (Listed Adelaide Hills Railway Stakes). In North America he is represented by New Boss (Allen ‘Black Cat’ Lecombe Memorial), Who Took the Money (Crescent City Derby) and Bienville Street (Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf Stakes).
Street Boss stands at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for a fee of $15,000, stands and nurses.
