Winterberry made a decisive move entering the far turn, sweeping past rivals on the outside to take the lead at the top of the stretch on her way to posting a three-quarter length victory in the $125,000 Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday, 13 October.
It was the first Stakes win for the two-year-old daughter of Frosted, who improved her record to two wins from three starts. Winterberry entered the race off a sixth-place finish against colts in the G1 Summer Stakes on 14 September.
Winterberry stumbled coming out of the starting gate but quickly recovered, and was settled into fourth as stablemate Souper Supreme went to the lead to set the pace. Nata Trouble took a slight lead at the half-mile marker followed by Neenah, as Winterberry moved into third.
Heading into the far turn, Winterberry swept past her rivals with a bold move on the outside, then took command of the race at the top of the stretch. Ahead by five lengths at one point, Winterberry was on cruise control as her other stablemate, Charlotte’s Heart, began cutting rapidly into her lead. Winterberry never wavered, eventually crossing the wire to win by three-quarters of a length while being geared down.
Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Ont., Winterberry is out of Dreams Are Free, a winning daughter of Bellamy Road. Dreams Are Free is out of Stakes-placed Off Limits and is a half-sister to G1-placed Off Topic (by Street Sense).
Winterberry is one of 10 Stakes winners this year for her sire, Frosted, who has also been represented by Post Time, a multiple Graded Stakes winner that is being pointed to the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile; Frost Free (G3 Chick Lang Stakes), Frost At Dawn (G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint) and Bustling, a three-time Graded Stakes winner in Australia.
