Late Frost took the lead at the half-mile pole and never looked back on her way to posting a two-and-a-quarter length victory in the $75,000 Shine Again Stakes at Timonium on Saturday, 24 August.
Trained by Michael Matz for Runnymore Racing, the four-year-old daughter of Frosted is now a two-time Stakes winner, having captured the New Start Stakes at Penn National in 2023. Late Frost improved her record to four wins, three seconds, and three third-place finishes in just 11 starts.
Late Frost broke alertly and prompted the pace while racing outside of Yesternight, then overtook that one midway down the backstretch. Late Frost began to edge away heading into the far turn, then was kept under a drive in the stretch, eventually crossing the wire an easy winner. Hot Fudge Warrior got up for second, with Mattitude taking third.
Bred in Pennsylvania by Gregory and Caroline Bentley Breeders, Late Frost is out of La La’s Cookin, by Harlan’s Holiday. Late Frost’s half-sister, La Contessa, is the dam of My Imagination, recently second in the G2 Greenwood Cup. Dam La La’s Cookin is a half-sister to Outofthebox, winner of the G1 Super Derby and second in both the G1 Florida Derby and G1 Fountain of Youth Stakes, and to Stakes winner Ruff and Ready.
Late Frost is the ninth Stakes winner of the year so far for her sire, Frosted. This year Frosted is also represented by multiple Graded Stakes winner and G1-placed Post Time, Frost Free (G3 Chick Lang Stakes), Frost At Dawn (G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint) and Bustling, a three-time Graded Stakes winner in Australia.
