The Goat makes it two straight with victory in G1 Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma

Son of Midshipman rallies from off the pace to earn second straight Group 1 win

The Goat rallied from off the pace to win the G1 Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma at Hipodromo Chile on Saturday, 5 October.

It was the second straight Group 1 victory for the Midshipman colt; he captured the G1 Dos Mil Guineas by eight lengths in early September.

A field of 14 went to the post in the Gran Criterium, with The Goat sent off as the favorite. After a clean start, The Goat was settled off the pace in fourth, content to stalk the early pace as the trio of Rodrerik (Midshipman), Toruk Makto and Ponteau (Midshipman) battled for the lead.

The order remained unchanged down the backstretch and into the far turn, where Toruk Makto shook loose and opened a slight lead on the rest of the field. The Goat, swung to the outside for a clear run at the leader, was set down for the drive in the stretch and came with a rush, sweeping past Toruk Makto to take the lead just under a furlong from the wire. The Goat easily held off the late charge of Gran Oriente to win by three-quarters of a length.

Bred in Chile by Haras Don Alberto, The Goat is out of the winning Rock of Gibraltar mare, Lavanda Aromatica, and hails from the family of Stakes winners Estocada and Luccina.

The Goat is the third Chilean G1 winner this year for his sire, Midshipman, who is also represented by Gran Dali (G1 Clasico Alberto Vial) and Cassis Violeta (G1 Premio Arturo Lyon Pena). In North America, Midshipman is the sire of 2024 Stakes winners Able Seaman, Mystic Seaport and Midshipman’s Dance.
