Blue Cheese came with a tenacious rally in deep stretch to overhaul Myglorybee nearing the wire to win the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes at Delta Downs by a neck on Friday, 11 October.
The victory in the seven-furlong contest marked the first Stakes win for the Midshipman gelding, who’d been knocking on the door in Stakes competition for some time.
A field of ten went to the post in the Gold Cup, and at the start it was Not On Herb that went to the front to set the pace. Blue Cheese was settled off the pace, racing in fifth before moving into fourth after the first half mile. Blue Cheese made his move leaving the backstretch, easing into contention on the far turn while running three-wide.
Set down for the drive at the top of the lane, Blue Cheese put in a furious rally to reel in both Not On Herb and Myglorybee nearing the wire to post a neck victory.
Blue Cheese was bred in Louisiana and races as a homebred for Mark Necaise’s Markkim Farms. He is out of Lemondropkisses (by Lemon Drop Kid), and hails from the female family of Tenski, winner of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, G3 Lake Placid Stakes and G3 Lake George.
In addition to Blue Cheese, Midshipman is also the sire of 2024 North American Stakes winners Able Seaman, Mystic Seaport and Midshipman’s Dance. In Chile so far this year, Midshipman has been represented by three G1 winners: The Goat (a two-time G1 winner), Gran Dali and Cassis Violeta.
