Switching back to the main track from a second-place finish in her only career turf start in August, Midshipman's daughter Back to Ohio put forth a gutsy effort on October 5 at Thistledown to win the Scarlet Gray Stakes. She notched her fifth Stakes win and her seventh in eight career starts.
Back to Ohio broke quickly but was settled into mid-pack by jockey Jareth Loveberry as the field travelled through the first four furlongs. Going into the final turn, the chestnut sophomore filly started passing rivals and was able to get up at the wire for a hard-fought win.
Back to Ohio was bred in Ohio by Trail M Boarding & Guest Farm and is out of the Stakes-placed mare, Sheza Runaway Star. In addition to Back to Ohio, Sheza Runaway Star has also produced the Stakes-placed filly, Ucantkeepup. Sheza Runaway Star is a full sister to Stakes-placed Best Air and a half to multiple Stakes winner and track record-setter Rivers Run Deep.
Midshipman is represented this season by the talented juveniles Amidst Waves, already a two-time Stakes winner of the Listed Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga and the Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park, and Ship Cadet, who wired the field when taking the Skidmore Stakes, also at Saratoga. He was the only stallion with multiple juvenile Stakes winners at Saratoga in 2023. Midshipman's 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business - no stallion under $55k can top it.
