Back to Ohio charged to the lead at the top of the stretch and was never threatened on her way to sailing to a five-and-a-half length victory in the Best of Ohio Miss Ohio Stakes at Thistledown on Saturday, 13 August.
Back to Ohio, a two-year-old filly by Midshipman, earned her first Stakes win in the six-furlong contest while improving her record to two wins and a second from three career starts.
Sent off as the favorite in the field of eight juvenile fillies, Back to Ohio was content to stalk the early pace set by Lady Lottie, who had gotten the better of her chestnut rival when posting a neck victory in their prior start, the Jim Morgan Memorial Tah Dah Stakes at Belterra Park. This time around was different, however, as Back to Ohio always had the measure of her rival, making her move with a four-wide sweep to take the lead as the field hit the top of the lane. From there it was a procession, as Back to Ohio galloped under the wire well in hand.
Back to Ohio was bred in Ohio by Trail M Boarding & Guest Farm and is out of the Stakes-placed mare, Sheza Runaway Star. In addition to Back to Ohio, Sheza Runaway Star has also produced the Stakes-placed filly, Ucantkeepup (by Keep Up). Sheza Runaway Star is a full sister to Stakes-placed Best Air and a half-sibling to Multiple Stakes winner and track record-setter, Rivers Run Deep (by Ready’s Image).
In addition to Back to Ohio, Midshipman is also represented this year by Royal Ship, recent winner of the G2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar; Fortino, a four-time Graded Stakes winner as a two-year-old in Chile, which includes a victory in the G1 Premio Alberto Vial Infante; Succeso, winner of the G2 Premio Verano Arturo Cousino L.; Special Reserve (Senator Robert C. Byrd Memorial Stakes) and Shipsational, who was placed in both the G2 Tampa Bay Derby and G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes.
