Although Admiral Abe had finished in the money in three of five starts on the turf, his eight wins prior to the Listed Marshall Jenney Stakes on August 23rd had all been on the main track. The switch off the turf proved to be fruitful, however, as the consistent five-year-old son of Midshipman landed his first added-money. It was a fairly straight-forward victory as Admiral Abe sprinted to the lead in the five-furlong affair just after the start and never looked back.
Bred in Kentucky by White Diamond Inc. & Five Ring Stables, Admiral Abe was previously Stakes-placed in last year's edition of the Marshall Jenney. His dam is out of a half-sister to Stakes-placed Wishing Willow who is a half to four other Stakes horses. Wishing Willow's dam is a half to Canadian Champion and Alcibiades Stakes winner L'Alezane.
Midshipman’s other Black Type winners in 2021 include the undefeated two-year-old Averly Jane who was an impressive winner of Saratoga's Skidmore Stakes. Her 86 Beyer in that race is the second fastest for a two-year-old filly this year. The juvenile speedster now heads to the G1 Darley Alcibiades on October 8th at Keeneland.
Other Stakes winners this year for Midshipman include Royal Ship, winner of the G2 Californian and G1-place in the Gold Cup; Special Reserve (G3 Maryland Sprint Match Series Stakes and G1-placed in the A. G. Vanderbilt Stakes); and Naval Laughter (G3 Modesty Stakes).
