Knowing the versatility of her sire, the connections of Midshipman’s daughter Shippy switched her to the turf for the first time in her last start, a five-furlong event at Gulfstream in April, a race in which she finished well for the runner-up spot in her first start since last September. Fast forward to July 11th – and back on the main track at Monmouth - the three-year-old filly relished the return to the main track with a win in the Listed Blue Sparkler Stakes.
The speedy sophomore filly, who placed in the G3 Schuylerville last year, moved to the front quickly after the start, broadening her lead as the field turned for home, and cruised to an easy four and one-half-length victory for her first career stakes win.
Shippy was bred by Morris B. Floyd and Chuck Givens in Kentucky and is out of the winning Speightstown mare Lead Me Not, a half to the dams of G3 winner Trouble Kid and Listed winner Hunka Burning Love.
Shippy represents the fourth Black Type winner for Midshipman since July 1st, a list that includes Firstmate, Relentless Dancer and Weekend Ride. For his career, Midshipman has sired 17% Stakes horses from starters. No stallion standing for a fee under $50K can do better. In addition, his 10 juvenile Black Type horses in 2019 can only be topped by Into Mischief and American Pharoah.
