Two hundred and thirty-two days; roughly seven and one-half months since Maxfield’s last race, a G1 win in Keeneland’s G1 Breeders’ Futurity on October 5, 2019. Following a visually impressive win in the G3 Matt Winn on May 23, it appears the three-year-old son of Street Sense is no worse for the wear and sitting solidly on the modified Triple Crown trail of 2020.
Maxfield broke alertly but then settled quickly in mid-pack under a confident ride by jockey Jose Ortiz. Although having to go five wide at the top of the stretch, the sophomore colt took aim at the leaders, taking the lead near the wire with an exciting win to stay undefeated.
Maxfield was bred in Kentucky by Godolphin and is out of the mare Velvety, a winning daughter of Darley stallion, Bernardini. Velvety is out of the multiple Graded Stakes-winner, Caress (G3 Beaugay, G3 Poker H., etc.), and is a half-sister to Sky Mesa (G1 Hopeful) and Golden Velvet (G3 Sixty Sails).
Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense is also the sire of 10 other G1 winners including 2019 high-level winners McKinzie and Dixie Blossom. No stallion standing under $175,000 could top his 18 dirt stakes horses last year.
Street Sense is standing the 2020 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for a fee of $75,000, stands and nurses.
