Big Changes took command at the top of the stretch and rolled to a three-and-a-half-length victory in the WV House of Delegates Speaker’s Cup Stakes at Mountaineer Park 4 Aug.
It was the second consecutive Stakes victory for the son of Midshipman, who captured the John Henry Stakes at Evangeline Downs last month.
Sent off as the heavy 4-5 favorite in the one-mile-and-seventy-yard turf contest, Big Changes sat just off the leader in second through the early stages of the race. Big Changes began his rally on the far turn, moving up to challenge longtime leader Judah while racing wide. Big Changes was able to shake clear of his rival at the top of the stretch and continued to draw off through the lane to post the victory.
Bred in Florida by Joanne Crowe and Joe Pickerrell, Big Changes is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare, Colorama. He hails from the immediate family of G2 winner Grecian Urn, and Stakes winners Grecian Dart and Dark Shell.
In addition to Big Changes, Midshipman is represented by the talented three-year-old filly, Sassy Sienna, winner of the G3 Fantasy Stakes earlier this season. Midshipman is also the sire of Stakes winners Firstmate, Slip The Cable and In The Navy Now.
