Fans that spent their Memorial Day holiday enjoying the races at Golden Gate Fields were treated to a very fitting winner of the featured G3 All American Stakes when Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.’s The Lieutenant rallied late to win the eight-furlong contest by a length.
It was the first Stakes victory for the five-year-old horse by Street Sense, who entered the race off a third-place finish in the G2 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita.
Settled near the rear of the field through the early stages of the race, The Lieutenant began closing in on longtime leader My Friend Emma on the far turn. With just a furlong left to run, The Lieutenant shot through an opening along the rail, just getting up in the shadow of the wire to earn the victory.
Bred in Kentucky by John D. Gunther, The Lieutenant is a half-brother to the undefeated three-year-old Justify, winner of the 2018 G1 Kentucky Derby, G1 Preakness and G1 Santa Anita Derby. The Lieutenant’s dam, Stage Magic, is a Stakes-placed daughter of Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, and is out of the G1-placed mare, Magical Illusion.
Street Sense has sired over 50 career Stakes winners, including multiple G1 winners Sweet Reason and Wedding Toast along with the outstanding Australian colt Hallowed Crown. In addition to The Lieutenant, Street Sense is also the sire of 2018 Graded Stakes winners Avery Island (G3 Withers) and McKinzie (G3 Sham Stakes).
