A determined late surge earned in-form filly Sensible Princess a Stakes breakthrough and continued the recent southern hemisphere success of her sire Street Sensein the G2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Pukekohe, NZ, on 25 November.
The win was Sensible Princess’s sixth from her 10 career starts and paved the way for an attempt at next month’s G1 Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham.
After challenging early in the home running, Sensible Princess appeared likely to be beaten until a late rally got her to the line a half-head in front of Francaletto.
The win reflected the form of Street Sense’s best Australian filly, Dixie Blossoms whose excellent recent spring form included a victory in the G3 Angst Stakes in Sydney and a G1 placing in the Myer Stakes at Flemington.
Sensible Princess, who was bred by her owner John Bromley, is a daughter of the Cape Cross mare Cape Princess whose four runners to date have all won. She becomes Street Sense’s 51st Stakes winner.
The win also proved timely for a Hong Kong buyer who at Karaka last week purchased a half-brother to Sensible Princess for NZ$250,000.
It was also the third Stakes success for the day at Pukekohe for Darley sires with Melt (Iffraaj) and Maygrove (Authorized) also winning.
Trainer Fraser Auret said Sensible Princess would now be considered for a start in the Captain Cook Stakes, a race his stable has won at its past two renewals.
Street Sense stands at a fee of US$35,000, stands and nurses, at Jonabell Farm, Kentucky.
