Bernardini colt bring $800k at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga
Even before hip number 112 entered the ring at the second and final day of the Fasig-Tipton Sale in Saratoga Springs, New York, there was a distinct buzz around the sales grounds that this was one yearling that just might be something special. Of course, it will be a while before we truly know just how special he is, but the bay colt by Bernardini didn't disappoint, bringing a final sales price of $800,000.
Presented for sale by Gainesway Farm, the yearling is out of a winning daughter of Unbridled's Song, the mare Tweeter, who is a half-sister to Champion and G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Bird Town and to G1 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone. John Ferguson was the buyer.
Medaglia d'Oro, who made quite an impression on the sale's first night with prices like $675,000, $400,000 and $400,000, was once again drawing the attention of buyers, especially when it came to hip number 121. Debby Oxley was the eventual high bidder at $625,000 for the bay filly out of a full sister to G1 winner Any Given Saturday. Taylor Made Sales Agency was the selling agent.
Street Sense, whose daughter Sweet Reason just completed a G1 hat trick with a win in the Test Stakes on August 2, also made some noise with hip number 117, a handsome bay colt out of a producing A.P. Indy mare, which brought a final bid of $550,000. Purchased by Robert Baker and William Mack, the yearling was sold as the property of Graves et al, Gainesway Farm, agent.
Freshman two-year-old sire Midshipman, one of the leaders by progeny earnings this year among his peer group, was represented by a $130,000 yearling, a bay colt from the family of Triple Crown winner Affirmed and sold by Select Sales. Midshipman was one of only two freshman sires with yearlings that sold during the second session of the sale. Grand Oaks was the purchaser.
