Vequist shot through an opening along the inside rail at the top of the stretch and pulled away to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by two lengths at Keeneland Nov. 6.
The Juvenile Fillies is the second G1 victory for the two-year-old daughter of Nyquist. Vequist took the G1 Spinaway at Saratoga in just her second career start Sept. 6. She followed that up with a strong runner-up finish to Dayoutoftheoffice in the G1 Frizette Stakes Oct. 10.
Ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Robert Reid Jr., Vequist stalked Dayoutoftheoffice from second through the early stages of the race, saving ground as she skimmed the inside rail. She then shot through an opening at the top of the stretch and quickly put her rivals away, pulling away to win by two widening lengths.
Bred in Kentucky by part-owner Swilcan Stables, Vequist is a daughter of the G2-placed Mineshaft mare Vero Amore.
Vequist is one of 13 first-crop winners for Champion Nyquist. In addition to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies' winner, Nyquist is also the sire of Gretzky the Great, winner of the G1 Summer Stakes. Nyquist is the first freshman sire since Danzig in 1984 to have two G1-winning juveniles before the end of September.
Nyquist will stand the 2021 breeding season at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for $75,000, stands and nurses.
