Sassy Sienna earned her first Graded Stakes win when she edged rival Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d’Oro) to win the G3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park by a nose.
Content to stalk favored Amy’s Challenge from second through the early stages of the race, the three-year-old daughter of Midshipman began closing on that rival as the field swept through the far turn. Entering the homestretch, Sassy Sienna was joined by Wonder Gadot, and the duo charged through the final furlong in tandem, first reeling in Amy’s Challenge in deep stretch before hitting the wire together in a photo finish.
Sassy Sienna was bred in Kentucky by Haymarket Farm LLC. She is out of the unraced Pleasant Tap mare, Tap For Gold. Sassy Sienna is a half-sister to Graded Stakes-placed Newton John, and is from the female family of Golden Reef, winner of the G2 Schuylerville Stakes.
Sassy Sienna is the 17th Stakes winner for her sire, Midshipman. The Champion son of Unbridled’s Song was represented in 2017 by Stakes winners Slip The Cable, Firstmate and Big Changes. Midshipman is also the sire of In The Navy Now, winner of the 2018 Nellie Morse Stakes.
Midshipman is standing the 2018 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $8,500, stands and nurses.
