Mystic Seaport sails to victory in $125,000 Tyson Gilpin/Glenn Petty Stakes

Daughter of Midshipman powers through rainstorm to earn first Stakes win

Mystic Seaport sat in a perfect stalking position through the early stages of the race before taking command and pulling away in the stretch to win the $125,000 Tyson Gilpin/Glenn Petty Stakes by three lengths at Colonial Downs on Saturday, 20 July.

The victory in the five-and-a-half-furlong turf sprint marked the first Stakes win for the four-year-old Midshipman filly, who improved her record to 10 wins from 19 starts.

A field of six fillies and mares went to the post in the Tyson Gilpin/Glenn Petty, which was contested during a driving rainstorm over a yielding turf course. Despite the adverse conditions, Mystic Seaport benefitted from a perfect stalking position, sitting just off the flank of front-runner Chambeau through the early stages of the race. Mystic Seaport then overtook Chambeau at the top of the lane and pulled away to win comfortably.

Bred in Virginia by Daybreak Stables, Mystic Seaport is out of Sketch Book, by Stormy Atlantic. Sketch Book is out of the multiple Stakes-winning and Graded Stakes-placed mare, Art Fan, and is a half-sister to Stakes-placed Happy Face.

Mystic Seaport continues the successful summer for her sire, Midshipman. In addition to Mystic Seaport, Midshipman is represented by G1 winners Cassis Violeta and Gran Dali. The stallion is also the sire of G3 winner, Tentadero and Mockingbird Stakes winner, Midshipman's Dance
