Mr Vargas took command out of the starting gate and never looked back as he rolled to a two-and-a-quarter-length victory in the G3 Green Flash Stakes at Del Mar 17 Aug.
It was the first Graded Stakes victory for the hard-knocking gelding by Midshipman, who now has been in-the-money in nine of eleven career starts.
Mr Vargas caught a flyer leaving the gate under jockey Joe Talamo and was soon engaged by Eddie Haskell and Stormy Liberal as he zipped the first quarter in 22.44 seconds. Mr Vargas began to edge clear in upper stretch and eventually pulled away to complete the five furlongs on firm turf in 56.15 seconds.
Mr Vargas was bred in Florida by Carl and Martha Johnson. He is out of Play It Back (by Put It Back) and hails from the female family of G3 Hillsborough H. winner, Classy Women.
In addition to Mr Vargas, Midshipman is the sire of 2019 Stakes winners Tweet, winner of the G1 Grande Premio Joao Cecilio Ferraz in Brazil; Old Shipman (G3 Grande Premio Presidente Augusto de Souza Queiroz in Brazil); Princess Warrior (Latonia Stakes); Big Changes (Sunshine Millions Turf) and Is Too (Louisiana Cup Distaff).
