Midshipman’s Stormy Regatta storms to victory
It appears that Midshipman's daughter Stormy Regatta is figuring out this thing called turf racing. Disappointing in her career debut on the dirt in March of 2015, the switch in surfaces has proved very fruitful for the three-year-old filly who has now won four of five starts on the surface with one third, including her win on August 27 in the Listed Riskaverse Stakes at Saratoga.
Stormy Regatta, winner of the Little Silver Stakes at Monmouth on July 26th, once again found herself racing in mid pack through the first three quarter of a mile in the one-mile event. As the field neared the turn for home, jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., started asking the filly for more and she delivered. The final outcome wasn’t determined until the wire but the sophomore fought hard down the stretch to get the win at the finish.
Bred by Pleasant Hill Partners in Kentucky, Stormy Regatta was produced from the A.P. Indy mare Storm Front. Storm Front is a full sister to Stakes-placed Indy Trouble and half-sister to G2 winner Utopian.
Midshipman’s year keeps getting better. Daughter Lady Shipman has won six of seven lifetime and now boasts the two highest Beyer Speed Figures – 104 and 102 – by a three-year-old filly in 2015. And Son Yiannis, a $560,000 sale two-year-old, has won three of four, including Santa Anita’s San Pedro Stakes. Cumulative figures show Midshipman near the top of his sire crop by earnings and he’s also excelling in that group by percentage of Stakes winners to starters.
