Leucothea sped to the lead right out of the starting gate and never looked back on her way to rolling to an eight-and-a-half-length victory in the six-furlong Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita Oct. 13.
It was the first Stakes win for the two-year-old daughter of Midshipman, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. After breaking her maiden in her second career start, Leucothea’s connections decided to ‘go big or go home’, ambitiously entering her in both the G1 Del Mar Debutante and G1 Chandelier. Unfortunately, both times she ran into a powerhouse named Bast, who is considered the leader of the juvenile filly division.
Bred in Kentucky by Woods Edge Farm, Leucothea is out of the Southern Halo mare, Any For Love, winner of the G1 Mil Guineas in Argentina. Leucothea is a half-sister to Graded Stakes-placed Distorted Love, by Distorted Humor.
Leucothea becomes the 25th Stakes winner for her sire Midshipman. In addition to the Anoakia winner, Midshipman is the sire of 2019 Stakes winners Tweet, (G1 Grande Premio Joao Cecilio Ferraz in Brazil); Mr Vargas (G3 Green Flash Stakes); Old Shipman (G3 Grande Premio Presidente Augusto de Souza Queiroz in Brazil); Princess Warrior (Latonia Stakes); Big Changes (Sunshine Millions Turf); Minecraft Maniac (Governor Terry E. Branstad Stakes); Is Too (Louisiana Cup Distaff) and In The Navy (Frank L. Brothers Stakes).
