Lady Shipman made her first start of the year a winning one with a sharp two-and-three-quarter-length score in the five furlong Ladies’ Turf Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
The daughter of Midshipman was making her first start since her narrow neck defeat to Mongolian Saturday in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last October. It was also the four-year-old filly’s first start for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who is pointing her to the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup day.
Lady Shipman broke alertly in the Ladies’ Turf Sprint and was up on the pace early. She then began to increase her lead on the far turn, opening up in the stretch to win comfortably while under a hand ride.
Bred in Kentucky by Randall E. Lowe, Lady Shipman is out of Sumthingtotalkabt, a half-sister to Stakes winner Rules Of War and Graded Stakes-placed Nanogram. The filly's second dam is multiple Stakes winner Nannetta.
Among Midshipman’s other top runners are San Pedro Stakes winner Yiannis, Riskaverse Stakes winner Stormy Regatta, Woodbine Stakes winner Her Majesty's Flag, Happy Ticket Stakes winner Naval Command, and G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes-placed Frammento.
Midshipman will stand the 2016 season at Jonabell Farm for a fee of $8,500 live foal, stands and nurses.
