Fortino took the lead a few strides out of the starting gate and never looked back on his way to posting a two-and-a-quarter length victory in the six-furlong G3 Clasico Seleccion de Potrillos at Hipodromo Chile on Saturday, 12 March.
The juvenile colt by Midshipman earned his first Graded Stakes win with the victory and appears to have a bright future ahead of him.
Breaking alertly from the inside post, Fortino went right to the lead a few strides out of the starting gate. He was soon joined by El Piri, and the pair raced as a team through the early stages of the race. Fortino put El Piri away at the top of the stretch and had plenty left in the tank to hold off late bids from Gran Veritat and Siempre Conmigo to win easily.
Fortino was bred in Chile by his owner, Haras Don Alberto, and is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare, Farreras.
Midshipman’s 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business. In 2021 Midshipman was represented by Stakes winners Royal Ship (G2), Special Reserve (G2), Naval Laughter (G3), Kopenhagen (G3) and Listed winner, Averly Jane.
Midshipman is standing the 2022 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $10,000, stands and nurses.
