Firster Unlashthekraken unleashes winning move in Italy
The winning margin of two and one-half lengths by Unlashthekraken on May 6 didn’t quite match his sire’s three-and-three-quarter length victory in his first career outing, but nonetheless, it was a like-father/like-son performance as first-year sire Desert Party gets off the mark with his first winner (click here for video).
Unlashthekraken broke alertly from the gate in this six-furlong sprint at Capannelle Racecourse in Rome, Italy, and settled in nicely, mid pack, for the first half mile. With a bit of urging, the juvenile then began to pull away from the field and was under a hand ride at the wire, two and one-half lengths in front of the rest.
Bred by Azienda Agricola le Ferriere Di Giampaolo Raponi in Kentucky, Unlashthekraken is a half-brother to Hoovergetthekeys, a winner in five of six starts as a two-year-old of 2013 and G3-placed this year in the Premio Parioli Sisal Matchpoint-Tris. Unlashthekraken is out of the Stakes-placed Royal Academy mare Honeypenny, a half-sister to G3 winner and G1-placed Millie’s Quest.
Desert Party, a Group winner at two, three and four, distinguished himself as a juvenile in the sire-making, G2 Sanford. With Unlashthekraken, he now becomes the third Darley America stallion, by emerging sire of sires Street Cry, to enter the ranks of "sire", joining Street Sense and Street Boss, both of whom are now represented by two G1 winners each.
