Averly Jane rocketed out of the starting gate and never looked back on her way to posting a powerful three-length victory in the Listed Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday, 10 October.
The two-year-old filly by Midshipman, who remains undefeated in four starts, bookended a superb opening weekend at Keeneland for her sire. Midshipman was also represented by Special Reserve, winner of the G2 Phoenix Stakes on opening day. Like Special Reserve, Averly Jane earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup – the Indian Summer was a qualifying race for the G2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Averly Jane set a New Stakes Record in the Indian Summer, covering the five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf in 1:02.65.
Averly Jane was bred by the University of Kentucky and is a half-sister to Chattel, winner of the Listed Skidmore Stakes. Her second dam, Capote’s Gift, is out of a Stakes-producing half-sister to Stakes winners Miami Slick and Cielo Otono and is a full sister to Stakes-placed Another Moment.
Midshipman’s 16% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business, and only Into Mischief can top his six 100+ Beyers this year. In addition to Averly Jane and Special Reserve, Midshipman is also represented by 2021 Graded Stakes winners Royal Ship (G2 Californian), Naval Laughter (G3 Modesty) and Kopenhagen (G3 Grande Premio Parana in Brazil).
