Campelanda slipped through an opening along the rail at the top of the stretch and pulled away from his rivals to post a one-and-three-quarter length victory in the G3 Grande Premio Presidente Antonio Correa Barbosa at Cidade Jardim on Saturday, 23 December.
The now seven-year-old horse by Midshipman continues to age like fine wine, notching his third Graded Stakes victory of his career. Campelanda improved his record to nine wins, nine seconds and five third place finishes in 32 career starts.
Racing in mid-pack throughout the early stages of the 11-furlong contest, Campelanda took advantage of an opening along the inside rail at the top of the stretch then proceeded to pull away through the lane to earn the victory. Favorite Quesar rallied but had to settle for second.
Bred in Brazil by Haras Santa Rita da Serra, Campelanda is out of the winning mare, Rainha Da Bateria. Campelanda is a half-brother to Champion Sprinter and multiple Graded Stakes winner, Berlino Di Tiger.
In addition to Campelanda, Midshipman is represented by the six-time Stakes winner Back to Ohio and the talented juvenile Stakes winners Amidst Waves and Ship Cadet. You'll have to go to $60,000 to find a horse that gets 16% Stakes horses in Kentucky.
Midshipman will stand the 2024 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $15,000, stands and nurses.
