Able Seaman charts winning course in Northern Lights Futurity

Midshipman gelding gets his first win and Stakes win in one fell swoop

Able Seaman put in a furious rally in the stretch to sweep past Arjun for Karz in the final strides to take the $75,000 Northern Lights Futurity by just over a length at Canterbury Park on Saturday, 31 August.

Making just his fourth career start, the two-year-old Midshipman gelding broke his maiden and earned his first Stakes victory in one broad stroke.

Content to sit at the rear of the field for most of the six-furlong contest, Able Seaman began his bid when passing the quarter pole, swinging out six-wide for a clear run at Arjun for Karz and I’ll Make Bank, who were battling it out on the front end. Able Seaman put in a determined run with less than a furlong to go, eventually sweeping past the leaders to win going away. Arjun for Karz had to settle for second, with Wocka Wocka getting up for third.

Able Seaman was bred in Minnesota by Richard Bremer and Cheryl Sprick, and is out the mare, Hidygo, by Indygo Shiner. Able Seaman is from the immediate family of multiple Stakes winner, Firstmate (also by Midshipman), and Stakes winners Concept Win (G3), Major Impact, Comparability, Earn Your Stripes and High Margin.

Able Seaman continues the successful summer for his sire, Midshipman, who is also represented this season by Chilean G1 winners Cassis Violeta and Gran Dali. The stallion is also the sire of U.S. Stakes winners, Midshipman's Dance and Mystic Seaport.
