Randomized broke on top and led throughout, then had to battle Champion Idiomatic through the stretch before inching ahead slightly at the wire to win the G1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Saratoga by a short head on Saturday, 8 June.
The four-year-old Nyquist filly was able to turn the tables on Idiomatic, who had finished a half-length in front of her in last fall’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. This was just her second start since the Breeders’ Cup; she finished second in the G2 Ruffian in her 2024 debut.
Sent to the front right out of the starting gate by Joel Rosario, Randomized led the way throughout the nine-furlong contest. Randomized continued to lead entering the homestretch but was bracing for the certain challenge to come from Idiomatic, who was closing quickly on the outside. The two talented fillies battled the length of the stretch, with Randomized just getting her head in front at the wire. It was four lengths back to Champion Pretty Mischievous, who finished third.
Bred in Kentucky by Cove Springs, LLC, Randomized was a $420,000 purchase at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She is the fourth foal out of the unraced Elusive Quality mare French Passport, a half-sister to G2 winners Smooth Air and Overdriven and to the dam of multiple G1 winner, Got Stormy. French Passport currently has a two-year-old filly by Frosted and a yearling filly by Maxfield.
In addition to Randomized, Nyquist is also the sire of fellow 2024 G1 winner Johannes, who recently captured the G1 Shoemaker Mile, and Studlydoright, who won the Listed Tremont Stakes on 6 June. Nyquist is also the sire of undefeated Nysos, winner of both the G3 Robert B. Lewis and G3 Bob Hope Stakes earlier this year, and Encino, winner of the G3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.
