Darley announces 2020 fees for its US stallions
2019 has been a another impressive year for Medaglia d’Oro, both in the ring and on the track. Following an exceptional 2018, in which eight of his yearlings brought $1,000,000 or more at the sales, he added four more seven-figure yearlings to his resume this year. He has now sired more million-dollar yearlings than any other sire over the last four years in North America.
On the racetrack, Medaglia d’Oro upped his career total of G1 winners to 25 with four additional winners at the highest level so far in 2019. Cambier Parc captured her second G1 of the year in this past weekend’s Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland while Higher Power powered his way to an impressive win in the Pacific Classic and now heads to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. In the southern hemisphere, Crown Prosecutor captured the New Zealand Derby while Flit won the One Thousand Guineas in Australia. Medaglia d’Oro will again stand at a fee of $200,000 in 2020.
Progeny of Street Sense also distinguished themselves very well in 2019. His four-year-old son McKinzie added a win in the G1 Whitney to his record, bringing his career total of G1 wins to four. He is one of the favorites for this year’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Street Sense’s two-year-old son Maxfield is also Breeders’ Cup bound after his explosive win in the G1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on Saturday, October 5. Street Sense’s fee will be $75,000 in 2020.
Nyquist, Frosted, Bernardini and Hard Spun will all stand at a fee of $40,000 next year. The first yearlings by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist caught the attention of buyers, who placed him at the top of the charts by average among his sire crop, with fellow first-crop sire and record-breaking Met Mile winner Frosted a close second. Frosted’s $850,000 Saratoga filly was the top price for a yearling by a freshman sire in 2019. Hard Spun’s first crop since returning from Japan are now three-year-olds, a group that included no fewer than 16 Black Type horses including G1 Ashland Stakes winner Out For A Spin.
Perennial leading sire Bernardini added to his growing legacy, not only as a sire, but as a maternal and paternal grandsire. While Capezzano gave him his 15th career G1 winner this year, daughters of Bernardini produced the winners of the G1 Kentucky Oaks, G1 Alabama, G1 Breeders’ Futurity, G1 Frizette, G1 United Nations and G1 Australian Derby, bringing his number of career G1 winners as a broodmare sire to eight. In addition, his sons have now been responsible for five G1 winners.
Medaglia d’Oro’s G1-winning son Astern will shuttle from Australia again and his first US-bred foals will be selling at the upcoming breeding stock sales. His fee will be $10,000 in 2020.
Completing the roster at Jonabell are Street Boss ($20,000) and Midshipman ($8,500).
Darren Fox, Sales Manager at Jonabell, said, “We couldn’t be more pleased with the overall performance of our stallions this year. Nyquist and Frosted were very well received with their first yearlings and we are excited about their first two-year-olds hitting the track next year. Street Sense has gone from strength to strength and will be well represented at the Breeders’ Cup next month, as will Medaglia d’Oro who continues to deliver both on the racetrack and at the sales.”
