Nitrogen has emerged as yet another high-class three-year-old filly this season, joining both Good Cheer and Ballerina d’Oro as Graded Stakes/Graded Stakes-placed runners for their sire, Medaglia d’Oro.
While both Good Cheer and Ballerina d’Oro have found success on dirt, Nitrogen has found turf more to her liking, and added a second Stakes win to her growing resume after she rallied from just off the pace to win the G3 Florida Oaks by a half-length at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, 8 March.
It was the second straight Stakes win for Nitrogen, who took the Listed Ginger Brew Stakes on the grass at Gulfstream in early January. She previously finished third in both the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and G1 Natalma Stakes as a juvenile.
Restrained in a tracking spot early, Nitrogen stalked the early pace set by Lush Lips and Opulent Restraint. Set down for the drive in the stretch, Nitrogen took a few strides to get going but was able to chase down Lush Lips to win by a half-length. Deloraine closed belatedly for third.
Nitrogen was bred in Kentucky by her owner, D.J. Stable LLC, and is out of the mare, Tiffany Case, a Stakes-placed daughter of Uncle Mo. In addition to Nitrogen, Tiffany Case is also the dam of Love To Shop (by Violence), winner of the Listed Toronto Cup and second in both the G2 Bessarabian Stakes and G3 Ontario Fashion Stakes.
Nitrogen is one of several recent Stakes winners for Medaglia d’Oro, joining Spirit of St Louis, winner of the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational and Good Cheer, winner of the G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes. Overseas, the stallion is represented by Meshtri, winner of both the G2 Al Maktoum Mile and Listed Dubai Creek Mile at Meydan.
Medaglia d’Oro is standing the 2025 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $75,000, stands and nurses.
