Stallions in Europe and America who had their first weanlings sell at the end of 2009 and at Book 1 of Keeneland’s recent January sale are led by Darley’s American-based sire Street Sense. Teofilo (pictured), who is based in Ireland at Kildangan Stud and has recently stood his first southern hemisphere season in Australia is second, with Hard Spun and Authorized close behind in third and fourth in the table.
Street Sense, a son of Street Cry and the first horse ever to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and go on to success in the Kentucky Derby, has had 11 weanlings sell for an average of US$158,772 and a median of US$160,000. His top-priced colt fetched US$340,000.
Teofilo, the unbeaten champion juvenile of 2006, has had 18 youngsters sell for an average of US$155,622, while Street Sense’s American counterpart Hard Spun has set an average of US$138,142 for 14 sold.
Sixteen weanlings by Epsom Derby winner Authorized, who stands at Dalham Hall Stud and is another to have recently returned from his first season in Australia, have changed hands at an average price of US$123,420, while also in the top ten is Any Given Saturday, with an average of US$104,142 for seven sold and Manduro, who topped the World Thoroughbred Rankings in 2007, and has had 21 of his yearlings pass through the ring for an average sales price of US$73,220.
