Rachel Alexandra took her earnings to just short of $3.5m when landing the Lady’s Secret Stakes at Monmouth Park by three lengths. The race had been increased in value from $150,000 to $400,000 in order to lure the superstar of the track back to New Jersey.
This was the first appearance at Monmouth Park for the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro since her outstanding win in last year’s G1 Haskell Invitational, in which she beat the champion three-year-old colt Summer Bird by six lengths.
Rachel Alexandra, who defeated Street Cry’s unbeaten Zenyatta in the race to be America’s Horse of the Year for 2009, was bred by Dolphus C Morrison from the Roar mare Lotta Kim. She has now won 13 of her 18 starts, including a 20-length swoop in the Kentucky Oaks, and has finished runner-up on four occasions.
Victor’s Cry, one of eleven Grade or Group One winners for Street Cry, just missed out on another top-flight victory when finishing second in the G1 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar, while his paternal half-brother Southdale, already a Grade Three winner, took third in the G2 Nijinsky Stakes at Woodbine.
