La Cara rolls home late to win G3 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs

Street Sense juvenile closes stoutly to earn her first Graded Stakes win

La Cara charged down the center of the course like a train to capture the G3 Pocahontas Stakes by three-quarters of a length at Churchill Downs on Saturday, 14 September.

The victory, which was the first Graded Stakes win for the two-year-old daughter of Street Sense, earned the filly 10 points on the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Patiently handled by jockey Ricardo Santana Jr., La Cara raced in mid-pack, down along the inside rail as Kimchi Cat and Stilettos led the field through the early stages of the race. La Cara moved two wide and between horses nearing the far turn, then was tipped four-wide and into the clear as the field entered the homestretch.

Under a full head of steam and with a clear run at the leaders, La Cara charged relentlessly down the center of the course, eventually reeling in Liam in the Dust nearing the wire to get the victory.

La Cara was bred in Kentucky and races as a homebred for Tracy Farmer. She is out of the Bernardini mare, Cara Caterina, a full sister to G1 winners To Honor and Serve and Angela Renee. Second dam is Stakes-winner, Pilfer, who has also produced Stakes-winner and G1-placed Elnaawi (Street Sense).

Street Sense is the sire of four Graded Stakes winners in 2024. In addition to La Cara, he is the sire of First Mission (G2 Alysheba Stakes, G3 Essex H.), Never Explain (G3 Tampa Bay Stakes) and Comparative (G3 Bayakoa and Ladies Stakes).
