Spun Glass split rivals in deep stretch and took the lead in the shadow of the wire to post a half-length victory in the G3 Ontario Fashion Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday, 14 October.
The six-year-old mare provided her sire, Hard Spun, with a quick-fire Graded Stakes double at Woodbine, following Millie Girl’s victory in the G3 Ontario Matron just some 30 minutes earlier.
A bit slow out of the starting gate, Spun Glass was outpaced early and raced near the rear of the nine-horse field through the opening half-mile. Racing down along the inside rail, Spun Glass began making up ground on the far turn, then was guided off the rail to challenge at the top of the stretch. Under strong urging from Luis Contreras, Spun Glass split rivals four deep at the sixteenth pole to take the lead, then held sway over the late-closing Awesome Treat for the victory. Loyalty, another daughter of Hard Spun, finished third, less than a length further back.
Spun Glass was bred in Maryland and races as a homebred for Larry Johnson. She is out of the multiple Stakes-placed mare, Allwewantforxmas, who has also produced the Stakes-placed Xmas Surprise (More Than Ready). Allwewantforxmas is a half sister to Hard Enough (Hard Spun), winner of the G3 Red Bank Stakes, Jersey Derby and Restoration Stakes.
In addition to Spun Glass and Millie Girl, Hard Spun is also represented by fellow Woodbine Stakes winners Loyalty (G3 Hendrie Stakes) and Elysian Fields ($500,000 Woodbine Oaks, 2nd King’s Plate and Breeders’ Stakes).
