Facundo H took the lead out of the starting gate and held off a bid from Groove in the stretch on his way to posting a three-length victory in the Listed Clasico Ismael Tocornal at Chile’s Club Hipico de Santiago on Friday, 16 June.
The six-year-old horse by Midshipman earned his first Stakes win in the eight-furlong contest, after previously taking second place in the race two years ago.
Confidently ridden by Jorge Gonzalez, Facundo H was hustled out of the starting and quickly opened up a two-length lead on his rivals. Entering the home straight it appeared that Facundo H might be overtaken by Groove, as that runner drew even with the longtime leader. Asked for more by his rider, Facundo H responded, gamely turning back Groove’s bid, and drawing off to win easily.
Facundo H races as a homebred for Haras Don Alberto and is out of the unraced mare, Fratellina. In addition to Facundo H, Fratellina has produced Farreras, dam of Chilean Champion two-year-old colt and multiple G1 winner, Fortino (also by Midshipman).
Midshipman's 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business - no stallion under $55k can top it. His 25 Black Type horses in 2022 were more than any other stallion under $100k. They included G2 San Diego winner Royal Ship and G3 Pocahontas winner Fun and Feisty, plus two other juvenile Stakes winners.
