Late Frost took the lead on the far turn and drew off in the stretch to post a two-length victory in the $100,000 New Start Stakes at Penn National on Friday, 2 June.
The three-year-old daughter of Frosted, who earned her first Stakes win in the New Start, improved her record to three wins and a second from four career starts.
Breaking sharply out of the gate, Late Frost was forwardly placed, sitting just behind leaders Organized Chaos and Tappin Josie as she saved ground along the inside rail. Entering the far turn, Late Frost moved up to challenge Tappin Josie for the lead. The pair matched strides through the turn until Late Frost took a slight lead as the field hit the top of the lane.
The dark bay/brown filly then kicked clear from the field and pulled away, eventually crossing the wire two lengths ahead of Tappin Josie. Simply Stated closed late to take third.
Bred in Pennsylvania by Gregory and Caroline Bentley Breeders, Late Frost is out of La La’s Cookin, by Harlan’s Holiday. La La’s Cookin is a half-sister to Outofthebox, winner of the G1 Super Derby and second in both the G1 Florida Derby and G1 Fountain of Youth Stakes, and to Stakes winner Ruff and Ready. Another half-sister, the Stakes-placed Unlimited Pleasure, is the dam of Graded Stakes winners Unlimited Budget (by Street Sense), Jardin and Beacon Shine.
In addition to Late Frost, Frosted is also the sire of 2023 Stakes winners Frost Point, winner of the G3 Doubledogdare Stakes; Ice Dancing, winner of the G3 Santa Ynez and Arctic Arrogance, runner-up in both the G3 Withers and Listed Jerome Stakes.
