Evan Sing overcame an outside draw and a crowded field to post a three-quarter length victory in the five-and-a-half furlong Colonel Power Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday, 18 February.
It was the first Stakes win for the four-year-old Hard Spun gelding, who making his Stakes debut in just his seventh career start.
Evan Sing broke alertly and raced in fourth, just off the early leaders, Angaston and Yankee Seven. Fanned wide heading into the homestretch, Evan Sing relentlessly closed in on the leaders, eventually overhauling them nearing the wire to earn a hard-fought victory.
Evan Sing was bred in Kentucky and races as a homebred for Norman Cheng. Evan Sing is out German Stakes winner, Viapervita, and is a half-brother to multiple Graded Stakes-placed Brother Francis.
Evan Sing is the newest Stakes winner for his sire, Hard Spun, who was represented by 12 Stakes winners in 2022. One of his Stakes winners was the promising Two Phil’s, winner of the G3 Street Sense Stakes as a juvenile and was recently second in the G3 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Hard Spun is standing the 2023 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $35,000, stands and nurses.
