Spun Glass split rivals in the stretch before bursting clear and pulling away to win the $75,000 Jameela Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday, 30 July.
The Jameela was the fifth win – and first Stakes victory – for the lightly-raced daughter of Hard Spun, who now has earnings over $200,000.
Ridden patiently by jockey Feargal Lynch, Spun Glass rated kindly in mid-pack through the early stages of the five-and-a-half furlong turf contest. Making steady progress between rivals nearing mid-stretch, Spun Glass split foes to take over at the sixteenth pole, then spurt clear to win by a half-length.
Spun Glass was bred in Maryland and races as a homebred for Larry Johnson. Her dam, the multiple Stakes-placed mare, Allwewantforxmas, is out of Stakes winner Grecian Wings and is a half-sister Hard Enough (by Hard Spun), winner of the G3 Red Bank Stakes, Jersey Derby, and Restoration Stakes.
Hard Spun is coming off a successful year which was highlighted by G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner, Aloha West, who recently captured the Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs. The stallion is also represented by additional 2022 Stakes winners Exotic West, Sparkle Blue, Green Light Go, Necker Island and My Philly Twirl.
