Simon Fubuki reeled in longtime leader Captain Brentford in deep stretch and drew off to a two-length victory in the Listed Macau Derby at Taipa Racecourse July 25.
It was the first Stakes win for the Medaglia d’Oro gelding, who formerly raced as Olympic when based in Australia.
Simon Fubuki saved ground along the inside rail as he tracked the leaders from fifth through the early stages of the race. As the field entered the home straight, the gelding was asked for more and he responded, quickly accelerating to reel in Captain Brentford in the final furlong to post the hard-earned victory.
Bred in Australia by Widden Stud Australia Pty Ltd., Simon Fubuki is out of the unraced mare Ringhals, by late Darley stallion Street Cry. The gelding’s second dam is the talented mare Black Mamba, winner of such top races as the G1 John C. Mabee Handicap and G2 Beverly Hills Handicap (twice). The family also has produced G1 AJC Australian Derby winner, Roman Emperor.
In addition to Simon Fubuki, Medaglia d’Oro’s 2021 Stakes winners include such standouts as Golden Sixty (multiple G1 winner and recently named Horse of the Year in Hong Kong for the second consecutive year); Souper Escape (G3 Trillium Stakes); Vigilantes Way (G3 Eatontown Stakes); Risk Taking (G3 Withers); Beautiful Gift (G3 Santa Ysabel); Moonlight d’Oro (G3 Las Virgenes) and Navratilova (Tepin Stakes).
