Golden Sixty, a son of Darley stallion Medaglia d’Oro, has been named Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year for the second successive season.
The award announced in Hong Kong on Tuesday night comes after a season in which the six-year-old was undefeated in seven starts, winning four times at G1 level.
So dominant was Golden Sixty over the past 12 months, he was also named Champion Miler and Champion Middle Distance performer. He also took out the Most Popular Horse for the year, an award voted for by the racing public.
In a further triumph for the Darley stallions in one of the world’s most competitive racing environments, Exceed And Excel’s brilliant son Exultant received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Hot King Prawn, who was sired by Denman while he was a member of the Darley roster, was named Hong Kong’s champion sprinter for 2020-21.
The Australian-bred Golden Sixty, a $A120,000 yearling who was later sold to his trainer Francis Lui at auction as a two-year-old for $NZ300,000 ended the current Hong Kong season as the winner of 17 of his 18-lifetime starts and $HK77 million.
Among the other winners celebrated on the eve of Hong Kong’s final race meeting of the season, Caspar Fownes took out his fourth trainer’s championship and Joao Moreira was crowned champion jockey, also for the fourth time.
