Gretzky the Great, by Nyquist, just broke his maiden on August 2nd, prevailing by four and one-quarter widening lengths on the main track at Woodbine when that race was taken off of the turf. Well, it appears that this precocious two-year-old might be a horse for any course as he captured the Soaring Free Stakes on the turf on August 23rd for his first career Stakes win and becomes the first Black Type winner for his sire.

In the Soaring Free, Gretzky The Great settle into second shortly after the start and stayed in that position until the final strides when he was able to pass the stubborn pacesetter and get the win. The final time of 1:13.83 was just under a second off of the course record for six and one-half furlongs.
Gretzky The Great was bred by Anderson Farms in Canada. He is out of the Stakes-placed Bernardini mare Pearl Turn who is out of a half to G2 winner Saint Anddan and to the dam of G3 winner Ganges.
Gretzky The Great is one of three first-crop winners for Kentucky Derby winner and Eclipse Champion Nyquist who also has sired Lady Lilly (Saratoga maiden special weight on August 2nd), and Dream Quist (Ellis Park maiden special weight on July 26th.
