Derby Day is Australia’s premier day of racing, and this years’ edition saw Le Romain land his second G1 victory in the Cantala Stakes over 1600m at Flemington on Saturday October 29.
With the addition of winkers for the first time the son of Hard Spun enjoyed a comfortable run under the guidance of leading hoop Hugh Bowman, and appeared to be travelling strongly as the field rounded the turn. The gelding shifted through his gears to show an impressive turn of foot and pulled away from his rivals with 50m remaining to secure a convincing victory.
Bred by Mr Mark Carusi, Le Romain is the sole runner for the Strategic mare Mignard who was a placegetter in the G2 Silver Slipper Trial. She hails from the family of Dubai’s Champion 3YO sprinter Long John who is a son of Street Cry.
Le Romain is one of nine G1 winners for his sire Hard Spun, who enjoyed outstanding success in the 2015 racing season adding three G1 winners to his name including Hard Not To Like, Hard Aces and Smooth Roller.
