Discreetness earned himself a spot on the Kentucky Derby trail with a hard-fought win in the one-mile $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park on January 18th. The win was his second straight stakes victory after taking the $250,000 Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park in his previous outing.
The three-year-old son of Discreet Cat broke well in the Smarty Jones and sat in third behind the early speed before making a three-wide move around the far turn. He battled gamely through the stretch to prevail by a head over Gordy Florida in very gutsy effort.
Bred in Kentucky by Trackside Farm and Tenlane Farm, Discreetness is out of the Elusive Quality mare Fondness. Fondness is a half-sister to Bahamian Pirate, winner of the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes, and Strong Hope, winner of the G2 Jim Dandy and G2 Dwyer. Discreetness hails from the female family of champions El Gran Senor and Try My Best.
Discreet Cat had a fantastic year in 2015 with nine individual black type winners, which is more than any other stallion standing for less than $25,000. His best runners lifetime include G1 Del Mar Oaks winner Discreet Marq, back-to-back G1 Carter Handicap winner Dads Caps, and G1 Chandelier Stakes winner Secret Compass.
Discreet Cat will stand for a fee of $7,500 (stands and nurses) in 2016.
