That's a d'ozen for Medaglia d'Oro
Medaglia d'Oro sired his second consecutive winner of the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap as Mshawish posted an impressive win February 7. It was the second Graded Stakes win in a row for the five-year-old, who easily won the G2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes over the same course last time out. Mshawish marks the 12th G1 winner lifetime for Medaglia d'Oro.
In the one-and-one-eighth-mile turf race Mshawish showed early speed and settled into third position, just off the pace. In need of running room at the top of the stretch, the son of Medaglia d'Oro found a spot to slip through along the inside and challenged in the final stages to take the win at the wire.
Bred by OTIF 2007, Mshawish is out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thunder Bayou, a half-sister to Stakes winners Meteorologist and Bayou Breeze, the dam of Stakes winner Branded. A Black-type winner in three countries, Mshawish's other wins include the G2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan.
Mshawish was the second Graded Stakes winner of the day for Medaglia d'Oro, after son Valid captured the G3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes just moments before, becoming the sixth US Stakes winner for the sire to date in 2015. Among Medaglia d'Oro's 12 G1 winners are 2014 G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap victor Lochte, Horse Of The Year Rachel Alexandra, G1 CashCall Futurity winner Violence, and G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty.
Medaglia d'Oro stands for $125,000 live foal, stands and nurses.
