He had to overcome both a driving rainstorm and his tenacious stablemate, but Yonkers did just that on his way to claiming victory by a determined head in the G3 JRA Chairman’s Handicap at Eagle Farm in Australia on Friday, 13 May.
The victory provided the six-year-old Medaglia d’Oro gelding with his second Stakes score, following his win in the G2 Shannon Stakes in September. Yonkers also gave trainer Chris Waller the winning exacta after getting the better of his stablemate, Our Intrigue, in an epic battle that lasted the length of the home stretch.
Yonkers was bred in Kentucky by Forging Oaks Farm LLC and is out of Anne of Kiev, a multiple Stakes-winning daughter of Oasis Dream. Yonkers hails from the immediate family of Stakes winner and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-placed Blessed Event and Sacrament, winner of the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes and G2 Prix Jean de Chaudenay.
Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of 88 Group/Graded winners including 26 that have won at G1 level. Yonkers joins such exciting prospects as Nostalgic, winner of the G3 Gazelle Stakes, Prevalence (G3 Commonwealth Stakes), Pennybaker (Heavenly Cause Stakes) and Mamounia (Listed Galilee Series Final) as recent 2022 Stakes winners, a list led by the mighty Golden Sixty.
Medaglia d’Oro is standing the 2022 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $100,000, stands and nurses.
