Leading freshman sire Nyquist was represented by his 17th first-crop juvenile winner on December 26th, as his two-year-old son Wipe the Slate won impressively going seven furlongs on the dirt at Santa Anita.
A runner-up on debut to highly touted TDN Rising Star Life is Good on November 22nd at Del Mar, Wipe the Slate was making his second career start for trainer Doug O'Neill and owner Reddam Racing. Wipe the Slate broke alertly under jockey Mario Gutierrez and sat in third a half-length off the pace in the early stages. He made a three-wide move around the turn, hit the lead in mid-stretch, and pulled away to win comfortably by just over three lengths.
Bred in Kentucky by Brookfield Stud, Wipe the Slate is out of the Black Type-placed Zensational mare Fancy and Flashy. He has been through the sales ring three times, bringing $60,000 as a short yearling at Fasig-Tipton February, $125,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, and finally bringing $175,000 to the bid of Dennis O'Neill at OBS in July.
Nyquist's 16 other winners include Vequist, winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and the likely Champion two-year-old filly of 2020, as well as Gretzky the Great, winner of the G1 Summer Stakes. He's also the sire of G1-placed fillies Lady Lilly and Nasreddine. His four first-crop juvenile G1 horses has only ever been matched by Bernardini, Congrats, and Capote.
Nyquist will stand the 2021 breeding season at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for $75,000, stands and nurses.
