Elusive Pimpernel, a two-year-old son of Elusive Quality, recorded his first Black type win in impressive fashion on August 18, landing the prestigious Acomb Stakes run over seven furlongs at York.
Settled off the swift early pace, Elusive Pimpernel seemed to be losing touch with four furlongs left to run but once switched to the outside, swept past his rivals to win by a head in a new juvenile course record time of 1:22.45.
He may step up to a mile for his next start in the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes and his victory today has earned him quotes of around 16/1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas and 20/1 for the Derby.
That he is now being touted as a potential Classic contender should come as no surprise, as this race has previously been won by the likes of King's Best and Rule Of Law, who went on to win the Guineas and the St Leger respectively.
Bred by Windflower Overseas Holdings Inc, Elusive Pimpernel is the second Stakes winner out of the winning Sadler’s Wells mare Cara Fantasy.
