Souper Escape made her seasonal debut a winning one when she held off the late charge of Crystal Glacier by a nose to win the G3 Trillium Stakes at Woodbine Race Course June 26.
The five-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare also captured the Trillium last year on her way to earning the Sovereign Award as Champion Older Mare in Canada.
Breaking alertly from the starting gate, Souper Escape was hustled to the front by jockey Luis Contreras. From there she led the field on a merry chase, setting a reasonable pace while leading by about a length. Souper Escape continued to lead into the homestretch, where her biggest challenge came from fellow Live Oak Plantation colorbearer Crystal Glacier, who made a late rally to contend for the win. The duo battled to the wire, with Souper Escape getting her nose down when it counted to claim the victory.
Souper Escape was bred in Florida by her owner, Live Oak Plantation. She is out of the Street Cry mare Cry And Catch Me, winner of the G1 Oak Leaf Stakes. Cry And Catch Me is a half-sister to European Champion Certify (by Elusive Quality), and hails from the family of Champion racehorse and sire, Habitat.
Souper Escape is the ninth Stakes winner for Medaglia d’Oro in 2021. In addition to the Trillium winner, he is represented by Golden Sixty (multiple G1 winner in Hong Kong), Vigilantes Way (G3 Eatontown Stakes), Risk Taking (G3 Withers), Beautiful Gift (G3 Santa Ysabel), Moonlight d’Oro (G3 Las Virgenes) and Listed winners Altaf, Adelong (in Australia) and New Trails (in Dubai).
