“We could be looking a future star here” were the words Del Mar track announcer Trevor Denman used to describe Songbird in her maiden victory on July 26th. It appears that Denman might have a second career as fortune teller as Medaglia d’Oro’s daughter remains undefeated with an impressive win in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and all but locked up divisional championship honors.
Although she started from the outside post, the striking juvenile filly quickly raced to the lead and never relinquished it. Bernardini’s Rachel’s Valentina (out of Medaglia d'Oro's Horse of the Year Rachel's Alexandra) was no match for Songbird and finished at least five lengths back in second.
Bred in Kentucky by John Antonelli, Songbird was purchased for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale by Fox Hill Farm. Songbird is out of Ivanavinalot, who captured the G2 Bonnie Miss and was second in the G2 Davona Dale as a three-year-old.
Medaglia d'Oro continues to add to an already tremendous year in 2015. He’s tied with Tapit by number of Black type winners this year, which include two-time G1 winner Songbird, G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap winner Mshawish and G2 winners Gold Medal Dancer and Mrs McDougal. The sire's other top runners include G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty and G1-winning turf specialist Marketing Mix.
Medaglia d'Oro will stand the upcoming breeding season at a fee of $150,000 live foal, stands and nurses.
